Emi Carter · the J-beauty longevity ebook

My mother is seventy‑two. People guess fifty‑five. Mainichi, onaji koto. Every day, the same thing.

No facelift, no filler, not one clinic laser. A steamed towel at night, a frozen one in the morning, camellia oil and a boxwood comb. I read the research behind every step. This 433-page ebook is her routine, the science, an honest rating for every technique, and 24 oil serums you can make yourself.

Illustration from the book
1979
A kissaten a few streets from the base at Yokosuka. A Navy engine mechanic orders “one hot sock, honorably, please.”
Where this comes from

My mother, Michiko Carter, was born Sato Michiko in 1953 in Kanazawa. My father, Jim Carter from Dayton, Ohio, was a Navy machinist's mate who walked into her coffee shop on a dare to order in Japanese. She laughed so hard she had to sit down behind the counter. He came back the next day, and the day after that. In Japan's family register she stayed Sato Michiko, and she made sure the name stayed in mine: Emi Sato Carter.

I was born at the Naval Hospital in Yokosuka in 1981 and grew up in Columbus, Ohio, watching her from the edge of the bathtub. She knelt by the tub so the water ran down and away. She steamed a damp towel at night and froze the same towel in the morning, next to the peas. Every stroke went upward. Every morning, sunscreen.

She learned it from her mother, my Obaachan, Sato Fumiko: the rice-bran bag, the cloudy rice-rinse water, camellia oil combed through with a boxwood comb, the iris-leaf bath every May 5. In my thirties I started reading the actual research. Some of it is hard science. Some of it is pure tradition. The book tells you which is which.

“Cream, medicine, cream. Like onigiri: the good part goes in the middle.”Okaasan, on her nightly tretinoin
Chapter 11 · The three things that matter most

The towel is the ritual. These three do the work.

If you remember nothing else from the book, remember the habits with the strongest evidence behind them. The towels, the shiatsu, the face roller, the rice water and the camellia oil are how you turn these into a ritual instead of a chore.

01

Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen

In the Nambour trial, adults assigned to daily sunscreen showed no detectable increase in skin aging over four and a half years. And the PA rating on your bottle started in Japan.

Strong
02

A retinoid at night

Once your skin can handle it. Decades of trials, from tretinoin for sun-damaged skin to retinol at 0.4%. Okaasan has used hers for more than ten years, between two coats of cream.

Strong
03

Gentle, consistent barrier care

A mild cleanser, lukewarm water, patting instead of rubbing, and a moisturizer with ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. The barrier is what lets you tolerate everything else.

Strong

“The towel is not the medicine. The towel is why I come to the bathroom. Then the sunscreen and the cream do the work.” — Okaasan

The honest part

Every technique and ingredient gets one of four labels.

I promised myself I'd be honest about what works. “Traditional” isn't an insult. It just means enjoy it for what it is, and don't spend your rent money on it.

Strong

Several good human trials or a meta-analysis support it.

Moderate

Some human trials, with promising but limited results.

Early

Small pilot studies, or mostly lab and animal research so far.

Traditional

Long heritage of use, with little or no modern evidence yet.

Try it tonight

The towel in the microwave.

Here's Ritual 2.1 from page 63, the mushi-taoru my father teased her about for years. The ebook version comes with the vessel science behind it, the illustrated steps on page 64, and who should skip it.

Every ritual in the book is laid out like this: what you need, how long, numbered steps, how often, how it should feel, and the stop signs.

Chapter 2 · Warmth · Ritual 2.1p. 63

Okaasan's Warm Towel Press

mushi-taoru · 蒸しタオル
Time4 minHow oftenUp to dailyBest forNormal to dry skin

You need

  • A small cotton face towel or washcloth
  • A microwave-safe plate
  • Your moisturizer, open and ready

Steps

  1. Soak the cloth in warm water and wring it until damp, not dripping.
  2. Fold it loosely on the plate and microwave 20 to 30 seconds. Add 10 seconds at a time if needed.
  3. Shake it out to release trapped steam and even out hot spots.
  4. Test on your inner wrist 5 to 10 seconds. It should feel like a warm bath.
  5. Lay it over your face, nose and mouth clear. Press gently with your palms. Don't rub.
  6. Leave 1 to 3 minutes until it cools. Two rounds is the limit.
  7. Pat dry and moisturize within a minute.
Evidence: Strong for the blood-flow response itself · Traditional for long-term skin benefitsStop signs: stinging, redness lasting over an hour, new broken vessels, or darker patches in sunny months. Skip it if you have rosacea or melasma.
Chapter 12 · Make your own

24 serums, every drop and gram written down.

Okaasan has never owned a store-bought face oil. She pours a little camellia oil into her palm, adds a drop of something else, and presses it in. Chapter 12 is that habit written down properly: exact amounts, safe strengths, and why every recipe is oil-only (no water means nothing for bacteria to grow in).

Each recipe uses ingredients from the encyclopedia at or below the amounts those entries recommend, and lists what it helps with, how to use it, what to watch out for, and how it should feel. Here are all 24, by goal.

Who's writing

I'm Emi. I watched from the edge of the bathtub.

I'm forty-five, Japanese-American, born in Yokosuka (Sato, my middle name, is my mother's family name) and raised in Columbus, Ohio, where I still live near my parents. For years, when friends asked what I did to my face, my honest answer was “nothing my mother would approve of.”

Then I started reading the actual studies, in dermatology and physiology journals, not product pages. I'm not a doctor or an esthetician. I'm a careful reader who wanted to know whether the freezer towel does anything. Everything I know about beauty comes from my mother's side of the family.

Okaasan · Michiko Carter (née Sato)Born 1953 in Kanazawa. The towels, the little bathroom fridge, the tsubaki oil

Questions

Before you buy.

Is it a printed book?

No. It's a 433-page PDF ebook, downloaded right after checkout. Read it on your phone in the bathroom or print the ritual cards and recipes you use most. There's no account to make.

Do I need to buy special tools?

No. Level 1 in Chapter 11 is five minutes with a cleanser, a moisturizer and sunscreen. Most rituals use a washcloth, your microwave and your freezer. When a tool is worth buying (a roller, a kassa stone, cups, an LED mask, a boxwood comb), the book tells you what to look for and what to skip.

Are the serum recipes safe to make at home?

They're simple, low-strength, oil-only blends built from the ingredient research in the book, each at or below the strength its encyclopedia entry recommends, with a patch test for every one. They haven't been tested as finished products in a trial, and the book says so.

Is this medical advice?

No. It's a researched guide, not a substitute for a dermatologist. Every chapter has caution boxes for pregnancy, rosacea, melasma, eczema, blood thinners and more, and sudden or patchy hair loss always needs a doctor.

How are the ebooks free with the serum?

Put the Auravael Elite Elixir in your cart and both ebooks, the rituals ebook and the formula library, are added at $0 automatically. You pay for the serum only, both ebooks download on the next screen, and the serum ships to the address you enter at checkout.

How does the second ebook deal work?

Your first ebook is the regular price. Add the other ebook to the same order and it drops to $17.50 automatically, no code needed.

What does the serum do, exactly?

It's a cosmetic leave-in scalp treatment: Auravael describes it as supporting a balanced, comfortable scalp and the appearance of fuller, healthier-looking hair. It contains no minoxidil, finasteride, silicones, parabens or synthetic fragrance. It isn't a medicine and isn't meant to treat hair loss. Apply a little to the scalp 2–4 times a week and massage for 30–60 seconds; one 10 mL bottle lasts about 2–4 months. Read the book's entries on its essential oils (and patch test) if you're pregnant, have epilepsy, or have sensitive skin.

Is Emi a real person?

Emi Sato Carter, Michiko Carter, Sato Fumiko and their family are characters created for this book, as its copyright page says. Their story frames real, researched techniques, and every source is listed at the back.

Can I return the serum?

Serum: returns are accepted only for an unopened box with its seal sticker intact, within 30 days. Once the box seal is broken, it can't be returned for hygiene reasons. Damaged, leaking, wrong or lost? We replace it free. The full policy is on the returns page.

What if it isn't for me?

Email support@emisatobeauty.com within 7 days and you'll get the ebook price back in full.
